worlds greatest shave ... again }

Hey guys. I said last year (in July) that I would possibly be doing the World's Greatest Shave again this year, and I am. In July, ironically enough.

Most of you would know someone who had/has leukaemia or lymphoma of some kind, and if you haven't, at least 3/4 of the world has read My Sister's Keeper. It's hard sometimes, knowing that as happy and healthy as we are, there are people that we don't even know struggling through cancer that we can't do anythings about. And that's human nature, and it's WONDERFUL. But there is something we can do about it.

Obviously I don't have leukaemia (or any other cancer, despite my little scare last year!), but I have known people with lymphoma and other kinds of cancers which are harmful, debilitating and often fatal. So I ty to participate in a function for the Leukaemia Foundation every year. Last year I lit up a balloon on Light the Night and raised upwards from $500 (which is good for a 17 year old from Adelaide), and the year before, I shaved my head and raised more than $600.

I'm trying for $700 this year.

This fanmix was constructed with the intention of covering all four seasons, following Michael and Sara's relationship. It's not necessarily in order, rather it's more of a general feel for the pairing.

Will you help me Light The Night?

Light The Night is a function held by the Leukemia Foundation. All groups/individuals participating are going for a walk at Elder Park in South Australia with lit balloons to show our support for the everyone suffering from Leukemia or other blood diseases.

I know some of you sponsored me to shave my head in the Worlds Greatest Shave last year, and I love you for that. (I might be doing it again next year).

I had problems with getting the money in for WGS so I'm donating that as part of this - since it's the same organisation. Yes, I fail at life. But hey, the online money I raised went through. Therefore, I currently have $415 (I had $200+ online for WGS)... it just hasn't gone through on my site yet.

If you're willing to donate, please click here. Don't feel pressured by the amounts they provide, just enter your own amount. Even $2 helps. INTERNATIONAL CREDIT CARDS/DONATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. No problems there.

It's CHRISTMAS IN JULY!!! So I just had a little get together with half a Smirnoff Twist and looking longingly at pudding and custard (I was talked into the gluten free custard though). I love Christmas in July.

Hey, look! It's déja vu! This is my post from last year again. Remember these quote icons? I'm at it again.

QUOTES. If you have a fav. quote, PLEASE post it. Because I use ThinkExist a lot of the time for icon quotes, but if you guys want something quoted - either from fanfiction, a book, whatever - then post it! I'd love to make text icons from it. If it's someone else's fanfiction, ask the author first :) I have enough quotes to last me a lifetime. - Lyrics. Oh god, anything poetic and lyrical, I'll jump on. Just go for it.

Also. I'm just about sick of cap sites and I LOVE to do icons from varying fandoms. SO!

If you've got a cap you love, or a pairing, or whatever, find me an image or three and I MAY make an icon out of it. I say may because my muse hates pressure. Also, it may be simple, it may be complex. This is only because of a) cap type b) style c) colouring. If it's a bad cap, it's not going to get used. When I say bad, when you're choosing, just check: is it grainy and blurred? Is it big enough? would it look okay in a 100x100 box? :) Then post XD

Keep in mind that these icons will go in a post as well, but they will be made first and foremost with you in mind (but not exclusive :)).

So, whatcha say? Also: headers, banners and walls *may* occur but don't ask for them. If I see a cap and go 'OMG I COULD WALL THAT' then it might happen. But then again, none of those may occur! So whatever. Lets just see how we go.

If you've never heard this song, then please watch the YouTube video above. That clip is from the movie Across the Universe (that version is the first one I heard, which taints me, I suppose. It's my favourite though. Sacralige?)

I don't actually know much about the Beatles or the song, but Wiki tells me that Dear Prudence was written by John Lennon, about Mia Farrow's sister Prudence. Lennon was concerned that Prudence was depressed, and was inviting her to come out to play.

Without knowing any of this, however (though now it comes into play,) I initially loved this song for the following reasons:

Tone:
Fresh, and bright. Long slurred notes, an alto/tenor pitch, and the English accent adding to it makes it sound bright, happy. I don't know about you, but for me, this song is uplifting. What with emo and everything at the moment, music is bogged down. And hello, this is me talking. I am a firm believer in Sad Is Happy For Deep People (ta, Stephen Moffatt) but this song is pure light blue, if you know what I mean. It's cheerful to a sad person. It's new - even though the song has been around since 1968 - to this generation, and brings a spark of life to today's music, in the midst of Blue October (an excellent band), Dashboard Confessional (erm, *blush* also liked by me), Deathcab for Cutie (*blush*), Muse, Nine Inch Nails and so many other... well... I hate to use the words 'well known', 'pop' or 'secular', but all of those are. Though Nine Inch Nails might not want to be. With the Beatles revival Across the Universe brought, Dear Prudence introduces a brighter tone to music.

...Though then there's Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite, I Am the Walrus, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds and Come Together... hell, anything off Sgt Peppers. Not so good for the mental health of today. Don't do drugs kiddies. (I love all four of those songs. Especially Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite.)

Which leads me to...

Message:
Okay, this is possibly the last thing that they meant... well... maybe. If it was actually written for Prudence with Lennon worrying about her being depressed, then perhaps I'm on the right track. This song makes me think of Light Blue, like I said before. The colour, because of all the talk about skies, 'the skies are blue' etc, makes me think happily of blue skies, bright colours, yellows, greens, and reds, all basic prime colours in their original solid shades. And since blue is a colour so associated with depression (Beyond Blue), this changes the connotation slightly, turns it around.

Do you think it encouraged Prudence to come out of her room? In Across the Universe, it encourages Prudence to come out of the closet (something that's symbolic in the movie but of little relevance (I think) in this situation), as you see in that clip.

I think it would encourage other people with depression, even just a little, to come out of their rooms. I mean, it made me go outside, and I'm a c-depressed computer geek who is glued to her laptop.

It speaks in truths. I was watching a music programme once, talking about the top most loved songs ever (Abba in particular), and Beautiful by Christina Aguilera came up. Not that this song is *wrong*, but it's not (necessarily) going to make someone who hasn't left their room all weekend because at school she's bullied, and she thinks it's because she's ugly, think she's pretty all of a sudden. Not really. She might say so, and she probably *is* beautiful, but there's always going to be this niggling fear.

The sun is up, the sky is blue. True ~~unless you're in England. Which the Beatles weren't at the time (they were in India)~~ because even with cloud cover, the sun is there, the sky is blue. So. Good. Yes.

It's beautiful and so are you. Baseless? Doesn't have the environment to fall back on, of course. The sun will rise. True. The sky is blue. True. It is beautiful. True. Are you? Sure. Will you always believe it? Of course not. No one thinks they're beautiful all the time. And if they do, they're liars. But I bet you are. Besides, the other lyrics are true...

They're basic truths, ones that will stay constant day in, day out (except the wind being low. That's not a constant, I know. Shut up.) which don't have a message of (either) 'brood, brood, brood, brood, brood...' like most pop songs or 'sex, sex, sex, omg sex'.

The interjoining lyrics are just as important. And they say; go out. Watch the clouds move across the skies. Look at the blue, and wonder at its depth. It's beautiful. Look at it. You're part of this, and that will never, ever change. OUT!

And when I say guh, I mean, guh. Good poetry gives me tummy flips. I got the tummy flips. It is supremely basic. Seriously, but it is gorgeous. There's no alliteration, no onomatopoea, nothing of the sort. Just basic painting.

It's impressive how effective that is. I can see the sky (without watching the movie I mean - that uses a lot of visual too) and the birds, and the sun, just by closing my eyes and listening.

Just rhyme and repetition, but essential. And pretty. And very true to era, if I'm correct.

Modern:
Considering everything above and bringing it back down to me, and me writing it. Today. In 2008. It is, I believe, very relatable to the people of today. I would love to have written it today and published it, to see if it would impact and help anyone.

I was discussing the Beatles the other day with my father, and I said that in a way, the Beatles had been ruined for me by the generations before me. They were CLASSIC. So now, you all groan slightly when you hear the word Beatles, don't you? Because you know they did drugs, were popular and that they are SO not cool now.

Which lays a lot of gorgeous songs to waste. You've all heard Help!, Hello, Yellow Submarine, Yesterday, etc, but have you heard She's So Heavy? Did you even realise there was a song *called* Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite before I brought it up (don't bother if you're looking for poetry, mind. Crack? Hell yes.)? Would you listen to them without the 'seriously old' connotation if I told you they were by someone these days? Not the Beatles?

Hence why I would love to have written and publsihed Dear Prudence (without the Beatles tag) today. Maybe it would have been appreciated more.

In sum, I would LOVE to have written this. Especially now, published now, for today's generation. For numerous reasons; lyrics, tone and message.

As a disclaimer, I just want to say, I think Across the Universe *did* change at least some of my generation's way of thinking about the Beatles. I mean, it opened MY eyes. I'd never heard of Dear Prudence, let alone any of the others.

Go ~~buy~~ hire that movie right now. It'll change your life.

And seriously, guys, what WERE the Beatles on when they wrote about the Blue People?

...Bugger that, what the hell is Come Together and I Am the Walrus about??

a collective master post of songs }

Fandoms consist of heaps of things. There are the artists, the writers, the musers, the betas, the helpers, the spammers, the scanners, etc etc etc. And they're all very wonderful, and useful.

But there are also the muso's, the ones that are OBSESSED with music, that can't stop listening to it. Some of them, however, don't compile, can't make graphics, whatever, and don't/can't share the music they relate to their particular love.

Over the last year, I have gathered about 60 (there are probably more, they were just hiding when I did a rake through my (comparatively small) selection of 1414 songs) Doctor/Master and/or Master songs from fanmixes and assorted other places. And I thought I'd share.

I picked ten random songs and grabbed the lyrics I thought applied to them. The rest are just in a list. The ten I picked aren't exactly the top ones, or whatever, they're just randoms from that list, the first ten that played when I had it on random.

I thought I'd share, and if you wanted to drop a list of yours, or just your favourites, we could swap and share titles so we could 'find' them separately. (iTunes sells songs... or... however... *g*) And/or compile a 'master' list of Master and/or Master/Doctor songs.

Going from to or

Cropping the original image (comes from Casanova the Miniseries), yes, once again, to 100x100. Like usual for me, that's all the prep I do, because I hate the sharpen tool, and anything like that can be done at the last minute. I like colouring raw material. However, there *is* a nasty little strip of green at the top. I blew the image to about 400% and used a 1pt clone stamp brush, pinpointing around it to mimic what should be there and just got rid of it. Remember, when using the clone stamp, KEEP TO THE IMAGE. Otherwise it looks cheap and fake.

This is now my base:

She's such a pretty lady, and I *love* how her hair looks with all those ribbons. So, this is a tut for how I tend to highlight reds, greens and blues and smoothen/soften/lighten creams/greys/whites using selective colouring.

New layer. Fill with #c7c67c, set to soft light 100% opacity

It should look like this: with highlighted ribbons and dress, a creamier, cleaner, softer neck, and the jacket of the man in the background all aqua blue (it ads a nice tinge to the icon rather than it being all red, I think.) Henriette's hair is also blue/purple in places, which is unnatural colouring, but lifts the image a little anyway. (You don't notice it if it's not pointed out.)

Copy Merged (Edit > Copy Merged) and paste, set to Soft Light 100% opacity. And you're done!

If you want to continue to the second version either skip the last step (the soft light) or hide it at the top and go on below. Your base should still look like this:

Next I created a screen layer and dotted one round fuzzy edged brush (about 54pts) in white (#ffffff) near her head then used the Smudge Tool to wiggle it around. It's hard to explain, but just play. The light spreads around and lightens areas, so wherever you want to highlight something or give something some more light.

I put that on 80% opacity because I didn't want it too bright, and moved it around the contours of her neck (erasing here and there).

In the end, my light texture looked like this:

Hide that layer and Select All, Copy Merged (Edit > Copy Merged) and paste it above the light layer (or, if you've already done that, it should be at the top. Just show it.). Show the light layer and set the top layer (the duplication of what is now your base) to Soft Light 100% opacity.

Anyone starting out, please do note. This colouring works for the image because it is high in reds (mainly) with a little bit of blue and green here and there. If your base is mainly brown or mainly black (the Supernatural colouring for example) it won't work. This is simply for highlighting an already startling image (which is why Henriette is so gorgeous onscreen!!)
